Layton wants Harper to make Family Day a holiday?!

February 18th, 2008 by Shawn

Remembrance DayLet me first say - I love the idea of having another holiday. Now let me explain why I think Jack Layton should not be suggesting that Family Day be a national holiday.

The NDP leader forgets that there is already a day that is not recognized as a holiday across the country. This is an important day that should be - it’s called Remembrance Day. It’s a the day remember the sacrifices made by those in the military who have fought in past and present conflicts.

I do understand what Family Day represents. It’s a great idea; but, it is the wrong one to fight for right now. Jack Layton should be fighting for Remembrance Day to be recognized across the country - both federally and provincially.

I was in Toronto for Remembrance Day in 2007 and it was sad to see how few people were in attendance. That is a national shame and it should be corrected before creating new holidays.

So the truth is out! Shawn Peterson is a baby-killing family hater! I knew it! Who cares what a holiday is called, or what it’s for? As long as we get it. We should have at least 2 paid holidays per month over and above our vacations!

You hit this one on the head Shawn. This past remembrance day I went to Harbour station for the first time for the ceremony, and half of the stadium was full. This is good, but the whole thing should be full! If it weren’t for the veterans where would we be today? If we forget what happened, it’s much easier for history to repeat itself.

Shawn, the only problem with your arguement is that turning Remeberance Day into a holiday will take the kids out of school, making it just another day off. At least when the kids are in school they go to ceremonys and learn about Canada’s War History instead of sleeping in and playing Xbox all day. Just my 2 cents.

Has our culture become so morally high-jacked that we actually need a single day to recognize our families? What does this say about us? Would we of had this same discussion 100 or even 50 years ago?

    Great comments everyone!

Liam - Here in New Brunswick they still have the ceremonies in the schools, they just have it the day before. I think that could work if they did make this a nation wide holiday.

Justin - It is sad. I was at the ceremony that Dalton McGuinty spoke at - and there were not that many people there! It was also rare to see people wearing poppies - I was the minority.
